REPSShield vs HourProof: An Honest Comparison
At a glance
Choose REPSShield if you…
- You want email sync (Gmail/Outlook) alongside calendar capture — we couldn't find email sync listed anywhere on HourProof's site.
- You want the automation in the base plan, not paywalled: our $10/month includes AI-assisted entries and calendar capture; HourProof gates AI, voice, calendar sync, and CPA exports behind $19.99/month Premium.
- You need team logins with roles, booking-stay check-ins, or a public API — none listed on HourProof's site.
Choose HourProof if you…
- You're iPhone-first and want a native iOS app today; REPSShield doesn't have an App Store app yet.
- You want to log hours by talking to ChatGPT or Claude — HourProof lists an official connector (Premium); we don't offer one.
- Their free core plan covers your needs and you'd rather pay $0 than $10/month.
Feature by feature
Logging & entries
HourProof's free tier is core hour tracking: log your rental activities, watch progress toward participation thresholds, keep it all in one place. Step up to Premium and you get AI-assisted logging, voice input, and a built-in timer. It's a clean manual-plus-AI logger aimed squarely at STR hosts proving material participation. REPSShield approaches logging as a capture problem. Connect Google or Outlook calendar and Gmail or Outlook mail, and the AI drafts suggested entries from your actual activity — you approve, edit, or decline each one. Voice entries work by speaking a description of the work; the app transcribes it and parses hours, dates, and activity type into a structured entry. There's a built-in stopwatch, 30 predefined activity types, and unlimited custom types you define yourself.
| Feature | REPSShield | HourProof |
|---|---|---|
| Manual entry | ||
| Built-in timer | ||
| Voice logging to structured entry | Premium only | |
| AI-assisted entry | Premium only | |
| Evidence attachments | receipts, photos, documents — with AI analysis | Premium — “receipt evidence” |
| Activity types | 30 built-in + unlimited custom | Not listed |

Automation & AI
Read HourProof's pricing carefully: the automation story lives almost entirely in Premium. AI-assisted logging, voice input, calendar sync, receipt evidence, and CPA-ready exports are all Premium features per their FAQ — the free plan is manual core tracking. That's a fair model, but the $19.99/month price is the real comparison point against REPSShield, not $0. REPSShield includes its automation in the $10/month base plan: calendar and email capture with AI-drafted entries, AI categorization, voice-to-structured-entry, and optional auto-approval of high-confidence suggestions. Its Advisor and Compliance AI modes add tax-guidance Q&A grounded in real documentation and an audit of your entries for risk flags. One honest gap: HourProof lists an official ChatGPT app and Claude connector (Premium) — REPSShield has no such connector, though its public API is documented for do-it-yourself wiring.
| Feature | REPSShield | HourProof |
|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted entry drafting | base plan | Premium only |
| Calendar capture | Google + Outlook, one-way | Premium; provider unspecified |
| Email capture (Gmail / Outlook) | one-way, AI-analyzed | Not listed |
| Auto-approval of suggestions | optional, high-confidence only | Not listed |
| Compliance AI audit of entries | Not listed | |
| ChatGPT / Claude connector | Not listedDIY via public API | Premium |

Integrations
HourProof lists “calendar sync” as a Premium feature without naming providers, and that's the extent of its integrations story: no booking-platform sync, no email sync, no CSV import, and no public API that we could find on their site. REPSShield's integration list is longer: Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook calendars, Gmail and Outlook mail (one-way — AI reads and suggests, never writes back), and Airbnb/Vrbo/Booking.com via iCal feeds. On bookings, there's a deliberate design choice: a detected stay creates a pending turnover check-in asking what work you did around it. A guest's stay is never auto-converted into your work hours, because it isn't. A public API with scoped keys covers time entries, properties, and reports.
| Feature | REPSShield | HourProof |
|---|---|---|
| Google / Outlook calendar | Premium; “calendar sync”, provider unspecified | |
| Gmail / Outlook mail | Not listed | |
| Booking sync (Airbnb / Vrbo) | iCal feeds; pending check-ins, never auto-logged | Not listed |
| CSV import | AI column mapping | Not listed |
| Public API | scoped keys | Not listed |

Compliance & reporting
Both apps aim at the same outcome: a defensible record of material participation. HourProof tracks progress toward the 100-hour STR thresholds with multi-property management, and Premium exports CPA-ready PDF summaries. The vibe is simplicity — log, watch the thresholds, export. REPSShield tracks the 750-hour REPS goal plus explicit STR 100-hour and 500-hour paths per property, with per-property material-participation math and grouping-election checks in its compliance engine. Reporting includes a tax-year statement PDF, an AI compliance-audit PDF with findings broken down by severity, and CSV export. Evidence — receipts, photos, documents — attaches to entries with AI analysis. Team members (spouse, bookkeeper, CPA) get separate logins with roles instead of sharing one account; we couldn't find any team features listed on HourProof's site.

Platforms & access
HourProof is on iOS, Android, and web — full coverage, and the iPhone app is a genuine advantage over REPSShield today. REPSShield runs on web and Android with iOS marked coming soon. If your tracking happens on an iPhone, that matters. Support-wise, HourProof lists a support email on its Play listing and runs a blog of investor guides; we couldn't find a help center listed. REPSShield offers in-app live chat with an AI first responder and likewise has no public self-serve help center.

Switching to REPSShield
- 1
Save your HourProof records.
Its CPA-ready PDF reports (Premium) are good historical records — keep them. Note that a PDF doesn't import into a new app, so plan to start your REPSShield log fresh or from a CSV if you have one.
- 2
Start your 14-day REPSShield trial
Add your properties, marking STR properties and choosing the 100-hour or 500-hour path.
- 3
Import any CSV history you have
REPSShield's importer maps columns with AI and asks you to confirm before creating anything. No CSV? Connect your calendar and email and let the AI surface past activity as suggested entries.
- 4
Connect booking iCal feeds
(Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com). Stays arrive as pending turnover check-ins — confirm what work you did, and only that becomes hours.
- 5
Set up team logins
For your spouse or CPA, then run your first CPA-ready PDF to see the finished report.
Switching from HourProof? Keep your old reports as historical records — they’re the proof of what you logged before the move.
